UNHCR and Relief International partner for Afghan refugees

Tehran, 20 June 2017 - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Relief International (RI) signed a new Letter of Understanding (LoU) on the World Refugee Day to enhance collaboration in the field of assistance activities for Afghan refugees.  The main areas of cooperation between the two offices will be in the areas of overall and thematic coordination, Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees (SSAR), information sharing, protection, education, health, livelihoods, Cash Based Interventions (CBI), emergency preparedness and response, advocacy and resource mobilization, partner’s capacity building and needs assessment for people with specific needs.

The Letter of Understanding is valid for two years and was jointly signed by UNHCR Representative in Iran, Mr. Sivanka Dhanapala and Relief International Country Director (Iran), Ms. Azadeh Hassani in UNHCR office in Tehran.

The Islamic Republic of Iran hosts one of the largest and protracted refugee populations in the world who have been in the country for almost 40 years and continues to generously provide them with services related to education, health and livelihood. According to Amayesh IX refugee registration exercise, there are 979,410 refugees in Iran (951,142 Afghan and 28,268 Iraqi refugees) out of which 97% reside in the urban settings and only less than 3% reside in settlements.
