The Field Unit Tehran was established in 2009 following the policy shift embarked upon by UNHCR Iran redirecting its assistance towards capacity building of refugees to help them meet their social, educational, medical and livelihood needs.
Field Unit is an operational unit based in the Central UNHCR office of Tehran which is responsible for a variety of programs and activities. It plays a catalytic role in delivering services/ assistance to the refugees using the holistic approach through consultation and collaboration within UNHCR.
In doing so, Field Unit aims to expand activities/ coverage by enhancing out reach and strengthening partnership with the relevant actors including the Goverment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, United Nation agencies, and NGOs for establishment of referral system. It also aims to rationalize the reception areas for more efficient and effective protection through service delivery, advocacy and capacity building.
Field Units geographical area of responsibility embraces the provinces of Tehran, Alborz, Esfahan, Qom, Semnan, Qazvin, Mazandaran, West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan and Kermanshah. Majority of refugees however reside in Tehran, Esfahan, Qom, Markazi and Qazvin provinces.
Field Unit hosts a large refugee population with 539,350 Afghan and 19,000 Iraqi refugees who are residing in these provinces.
